In the early Eighties, hardcore punk was taking over the D.C. heavy-music scene. Going against the grain, Scott Wino Weinrich launched stoner-doom crew the Obsessed in nearby Potomac, Maryland. The band s Sabbathian sound was all metal, but Wino s no bullshit approach won over punks like Ian MacKaye and Henry Rollins. 1994’s The Church Within — the Obsessed’s final album before their 16-year breakup — typifies their approach, riff-soaked and tough as nails.
