Carcass weren’t shy about their grisly proclivities when the British goregrind pioneers came onto the scene in 1988. With songs titled “Genital Grinder” and “Carbonized Eyesockets,” and album artwork so heinously violent that it still can’t be sold in most record shops, Reek of Putrefaction is death-metal in the most literal sense — a festering mass grave of gurgling screams, battering blast-beats and hideous riffs made even uglier with gobs of distortion. It’s still turning stomachs all these years later.
